Previous activities

Among Czechs there has long been a high level of interest in Nordic literature. Our grandparents were eager to get their hands on the books of Knut Hamsun, Sigrid Undset and Selma Lagerlöf; they also went to the theatre to see the plays of Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg. The huge popularity of contemporary Nordic literature is due in no small part to the region’s celebrated crime fiction – Stieg Larsson, Jo Nesbø and Jussi Adler-Olsen are names known by a great many Czechs today.
The Book World Guest of Honour are in 2016 in frame of the campaign #ReadNordic the Nordic countries – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The aim of the guest of honour is to present current literary in Nordic literature and introduce us books written by authors coming to the fair.

Karl Ove Knausgård will be participating at The Spring Humanities Festival in Chicago, which takes place between April 28 and May 1.

Meeting of NORLA’s committee of experts for fiction for the consideration of applications for translation subsidies with deadline 1 April.

Lars. Fr. Svendsen and Vigdis Hjorth will take part in the Arsenal book fair in Kiev, Ukraine 20−21 April to promote the Ukrainian translations of Jørgen + Anne er sant (Totally True Love) and Frihetens filosofi, (The Philosophy of Freedom), respectively. The Norwegian embassy in Kiev and NORLA are responsible for the event, in collaboration with the book fair. Dina Roll-Hansen will take part from NORLA.

At NORLA we are pleased about the overwhelming response to our offer of stays at the translators hotel for translators who translate directly from Norwegian. This spring four lucky applicants have been awarded two-week stays simultaneously in Oslo at Hotell Bondeheimen. This will be the translators hotel’s fourth season.

The four translators we are happy to give a warm welcome to Oslo are:

Rositsa G. Tsvetanova (Bulgarian)
Sofija Vukovic (Serbian)
Martin Aitken (British)
Olga Drobot (Russian).

NORLA annually hands out an award to a translator of Norwegian literature. The award is given for translations directly from Norwegian.
In 2016, the award will be given to a talented young translator of non-fiction as an encouragement towards continued efforts.

NORLA has for some time been cooperating with Seagull School of Publishing about a masterclass/seminar on translation to/from Indian languages. The seminar was originally planned for the autumn 2015, but will now take place March 18.
Norwegian writer Pedro Carmona-Alvarez will participate and work together with the translators on an excerpt from his novel “The Weather changed, Summer came, and so on”, which has been translated from the Norwegian by Diane Oatley. The English text will be used as a basis for translations into Indian languages.

Norwegian authors and NORLA will participate also this year at the Book Fair in Leipzig, Germany. Look forward to meeting the following six authors: Tor Fretheim, Gard Sveen, Tore Rem, Ingvild H. Rishøi, Audhild Solberg and Arne Svingen.

In collaboration with the royal Norwegian embassy in Tokyo NORLA is looking forward to presenting a two day programme about Norwegian literature in Japan. The event is designed for Japanese translators and publishers and will have a particular focus on crime fiction and children’s literature.
Participants from Norway are authors Jørn Lier Horst, Mari Kanstad Johnsen, publisher Svein Størksen of Magikon publishing house and translator Anne Lande Peters, as well as Margit Walsø and Dina Roll-Hansen from NORLA.
